Broomiknowe stack up with champions to secure victory

Representing the Bonnryrigg club in the 6.5-1.5 victory were the current club champion and seven past champions, which could even be a first for the event.

“I asked some of the older members watching if they had ever seen that before and none of them could recall that happening,” said Broomieknowe team manager Scott Porter.

For the record, the eight players were title holder Lee Morgan, Alan Sim, Jamie McIntosh, Kevin Hastings, Kenny Smith, Willie Henderson, Sean Marc and Scott Reid.

In what was a welcome return to home soil after four consecutive away matches, Morgan, Sim, McIntosh, Reid and Lothians champion Marc delivered points for Broomieknowe.

There was a ding-dong battle at Craigmillar Park, where Andy Utterson and Bryan Davies secured a point for the home team against Ratho Park in a nervous finish.

Ratho started well, going ahead in three of the first four matches and were looking strong favourites for the win holding a 4-2 lead before Utterson and Davies eeked out one-hole victories in the bottom two games.

The point retained top spot for Ratho, who have ten points from seven games to sit just ahead of Craigmillar Park.

It’s now six wins out of six for Turnhouse after they beat Prestonfield 7-1 at home while Royal Burgess won on the road at Merchants in the same section.

“A spirited display by the Merchants against a star-studded Burgess side, with three of our defeats going down to the last hole,” reported Merchants man Adam George.

Turnhouse are all but through to the knock-out stage while only Royal Musselburgh look as though they can stop Royal Burgess progressing.

It’s a bit tighter in Section B, where Bruntsfield Links are out in front but have Baberton and Mortonhall close behind.

Duddingston, last season’s beaten finalists, are the Section D pacesetters with ten points from seven games.

But Longniddry, with a 100 per cent record from four matches, are a threat to the Capital club in the battle for top spot in that group.
