The victory also keeps alive his hopes of playing in next month’s World Championship in Las Vegas.

The 23-year-old Murrayfield skip has won the World Junior Championship, the World Student Games and two national junior titles, but he was desperate to claim his first senior crown, especially after losing last year’s final to David Murdoch.

Everything ran smoothly this time as Mouat and his team-mates Hammy McMillan, Bobby Lammie and Grant Hardie went through the entire week unbeaten, winning all 11 matches and underlining their superiority by defeating 2014 Olympic silver medallist Greg Drummond 7-5 in the final. They will now play-off against Olympic skip Kyle Smith to decide who represents Scotland at the Worlds in Vegas.

Mouat and company had already won four tournaments this season – three of them in Canada – and they led Drummond’s team 5-1 at the halfway stage. “We were in control and just kept the momentum going,” recalled Mouat. “We won it with my second-last stone in the tenth end.

“I was quite confident before the final. It’s never easy to go through the whole week unbeaten, but I knew we’d win if we played the way we’d done all week. The 11th win was the most important one and we’ve finally managed to win the men’s title, so you can definitely say we’re no longer juniors.

“It’s been a really successful season for us, but we’re still looking to win the play-off against Kyle’s team in two weeks time, and we’re aiming to represent Scotland in Las Vegas. We’re obviously really happy to have won the Scottish (Championship), but we can’t say we’re going to the Worlds yet.”
