Cameron Fisher wins sprint at CoE Running Festival

Cameron Fisher captured the £3000 first prize in the Ortholink 110 metres handicap at the City of Edinburgh Running Festival at Meggetland.

Fisher, 17, a Jed Thistle rugby winger, took heat nine of the 12 heats of the 110 metres handicap in 11.69 secs from a start of 13.5 metres, with Capital teenager Cameron Tindle coming through from scratch to finish second on the grass track.

But on an increasingly cold evening Tindle withdrew from the final as a precaution, complaining of a tight hamstring muscle.

Fisher won the final in 11.47 seconds from a start of 13.5m. “That’s easily the best I’ve ever run,” he said. Second was Greg Kelly (East Kilbride 6.5m) and third Glyn Desport (Hawick 9.5m).

Fisher’s coach Chico Woods was full of praise for his young charge, a pupil at Jedburgh Grammar School and a former Youths 90 metres winner at the New Year Sprint. “He’s worked hard and he deserves it. He’s got the potential to be a top amateur if he keeps doing what he’s doing but I think he might be better over longer distances.”

Andrew Thomson (Jed AC) gave Woods a double, winning the 800m handicap from a start of 50m in 1:58.97.

Another Borderer, Earlston High School pupil Emily Dagg won the Indigo women’s invitation sprint in 12.0 seconds from a mark of 20 metres.

Gavin Welsh (Boroughmuir) won the Sandy Jardine Memorial 300 metres for the second year.
