Canoeist Bradley Forbes-Cryans claims silver at World Under-23 Championships

Capital canoeist Bradley Forbes-Cryans had mixed feelings after claiming a silver medal in yesterday's K1 kayak final at the World Under-23 Slalom Championships in Ivrea, Italy.

The Roslin paddler was delighted to finally make it onto the podium following three top-ten finishes this season and a disastrous 19th place in last Tuesday’s team event.

A clean run yesterday, timed at 77.26secs, gave Forbes-Cryans his best result since the 2016 World Cup Finals, but then the frustration kicked in as he realised he had finished just 0.04secs behind the Italian winner Jakob Weger with Swedish bronze medallist Erik Holmer almost four seconds behind the top two.

“It was hard to miss out on the gold by such a small margin, but the Italian guy was racing on his home water,” pointed out Forbes-Cryans. “I woke up this morning with a good feeling and I knew what I wanted to achieve in my final Under-23 race. I really gave it my best shot in the final and I can walk away very, very happy with what I’ve achieved. I’m super-happy!

“I wasn’t guaranteed a medal when I finished because there were two other competitors still to go, but I knew how quick my time was and I didn’t think anybody else would be able to go faster.”

The Scot’s next major target is the World Championships in Rio in late-September, but he will be back on the water earlier that month at the World Cup Finals in Spain. He currently sits fifth in the World Cup rankings after the first three rounds in Slovakia, Poland and Germany.
