Staal, 25, who will join the club on a one-year deal ahead of the new Elite League season has one of the most famous names in ice hockey as one of four brothers, who have all played in the
National Hockey League.

Whilst older brothers Eric, Marc and Jordan still play the game at the highest level, Jared has been released from his NHL contract but comes to Edinburgh with a wealth of experience having played over 200 games in the American Hockey League, as well as two NHL appearances for Carolina where he played on the same line as brothers Jordan and Eric.

Neil said: “We’re delighted to welcome Jared and his wife Natalie to Edinburgh. With over 200 American League games to his name, we’re signing a very accomplished player, who has done his research on us and knows what we’re trying to achieve here at Murrayfield.

“He’s versatile and can be used in a number of roles across our top three lines. He had a decent year last season in the East Coast League where, in a very deep team, he scored 12 goals and 12 assists. He’s keen to show what he can do offensively and we’re excited to give him that opportunity. There are very few players we’ll sign who have amassed the same level of experience as Jared, and he’s still only 25.”

Capitals player-coach Michal Dobron echoed Neil’s sentiments on the 6ft 3in winger and added: “When we had the chance to bring Jared to the club it was an easy decision. He’s a strong player who can play across the forward line and he’ll be another player on our roster who is talented on special teams. I know Caps fans are going to love him.”
