Carlton toast championship success with resounding win

A victorious Carlton team show off their CSL Eastern Premiership shield after being crowned champions

At Grange Loan, Steve Gilmour and his Carlton side were presented with the trophy and then proceeded to thump already relegated Stoneywood-Dyce by 225 runs.

Batting first, Carlton lost Fraser Watts and Arun Pillai early, but Rory McCann and Gordon Drummond then put together a 161-run third-wicket partnership.

They made 75 and 81 respectively before Hugo Southwell made 94 not out and South African Mario Olivier smashed a superb 105 not out.

They posted 388-5 and then the bowlers took control.

Chayank Gosain, in particular, was on form, the spinner taking 6-30 against the beleaguered visitors from Aberdeen.

Carlton will now go into another home match this weekend, the Grand Final against the West champions Clydesdale.

Meanwhile, Watsonians finished second with a final-day win over Glenrothes. Captain Ewan Chalmers showed his quality to lead the way with 116 not out as the Edinburgh men made 241-8 batting first at Myreside.

With the ball Henk Conradie then took four wickets and Andy McKay got the two he required to take him to 40 for the league summer. In the end Sonians won by 102 runs.

Mazars Grange finished fourth after a seven-wicket loss at Forfarshire.

Skipper for the day Alex Baum made 60 and Tom Foulds chipped in with 34 as the visitors posted 196-9 batting first in Broughty Ferry.

Graeme Beghin was then in inspired form for Forfarshire though, his 107 not out seeing them home.

And Heriot’s ended up fifth after a 115-run loss at Falkland.

The Fifers batted first and made a competitive looking 184 all out. Adrian Neill managed to take four wickets too, like McKay, taking him up to 40 for the league campaign.

Heriot’s, batting in reply, never got going and they fell to 26-6 at one point.

Near the end Neill battled well for 18 and Scott Robertson 10, but the damage had been done and they were 69 all out, Scotland bowler Safyaan Sharif taking six wickets for Falkland.

In the final match Aberdeenshire defeated Arbroath.

Meanwhile, SMRH came out on top in the ‘winner takes all’ clash with RH Corstorphine in the Championship.

The teams knew that whoever came out on top would be crowned champions and the hosts batted first at Inverleith.

In the end they made 171-6 from their 50 overs, Kyle McCallum the mainstay with 52 from 82 balls.

Elliot Ruthven then led the way with three wickets as the visitors were 124 all out to lose by 47 runs.

SMRH now face a play-off on Saturday against Meigle at Freuchie for a place in the top flight.

Their skipper Greg Ruthven said: “I am proud of the way the guys stuck to the task.

“There was a bit of pressure on us after recent losses, but the batsmen dug in to get us up to a total we thought we could defend.

“Our fielding was then excellent and that, along with some accurate bowling, meant that RH Corstorphine were on the back foot a bit. We will enjoy this league win then reset and get ready for the play-off match in training this week.”
