Cricket: Star duo leave rivals Beghin for mercy

GRAEME BEGHIN and Steve Paige were the main men for Edinburgh South and Watsonians II respectively in East One as both teams posted their second league wins of the summer.

South African Beghin is now just one run short of 400 for the league campaign after his 73 not out helped his club defeat Edinburgh Accies by seven wickets at Inch Park.

Alasdair Slack took four wickets for Edinburgh South as Accies were bowled out for 112 before Beghin was the cornerstone of the successful run chase.

Captain Paige took 6-16 as bottom club Dunfermline were put to the sword by Watsonians II at McKane Park.

The Fifers were all out for 49 and Watsonians II won by seven wickets in the end.

Carlton II and Grange II are both still unbeaten at the top of the table.

The Grange Loan side posted 194-9 batting first at home to Murrayfield DAFS, Matt Wells top scoring with 39.

In DAFS’ reply, Mo Ahmed and Gavin Rittoo both took three wickets as the visitors fell 38 runs short.

In Musselburgh, Grange II’s bowlers were on top form to bowl the hosts out for 82. Giles Holmes then hit 32 not out to see his team home by seven wickets.

A superb 114 from Scott Ruthven was the catalyst for St Boswells’ 81-run win over Holy Cross at Arboretum.

In East Two, Gurpreet Singh took three wickets and then scored 37 not out to guide Heriot’s II to a win over Leith FAB.
