Edinburgh canoeist David Florence sent a message to his rivals at the slalom World Cup in La Seu d’Urgell near Barcelona yesterday as he went more than three seconds quicker than anyone else to qualify for today’s C1 semi-finals.
The former world champion and Olympic silver medallist, who turns 33 today, kept his title hopes alive by producing a clear run in 90.45 seconds, leaving him 3.31secs ahead of Slovenia’s Luka Bozic.
Czech World Cup leader Stanislav Jezek also qualified safely in eighth.
Florence returned with Rich Hounslow to post the fastest time – 99.41 – in the C2 doubles heats. Two clipped gates cost them four seconds in penalties, although they still qualified comfortably in ninth.
Roslin youngster Brad Forbes-Cryans battled through to today’s K1 kayak semis, clocking 92.01 on his second attempt.
