Heriot’s skipper hits 70 as Ferguslie are sent packing

Heriot’s cricket captain Steve Knox led by example to help his side to victory in their opening Scottish Cup group match of the season on Saturday.

With rain affecting many of the matches due to be played in the revamped Cup on the first day of the 2012 season the Goldenacre men managed to secure a home win over Ferguslie in Group B.

Batting first the visitors made 144 all out, Jamie Cook carrying his bat with 71 not out while Sean Weeraratna and Keith Morton both picked up three wickets for Heriot’s.

Rain meant that Heriot’s run chase was amended to 138 from 43 overs and they easily reached their target with only three wickets lost, Knox making 70 and overseas amateur Bradley Kneebone making 41 on debut.

In the same group Edinburgh Accies were defeated by Stirling County at New Williamsfield. Batting first Accies were in trouble early on and never really recovered, 44-6 eventually becoming 96 all out despite a 51-run partnership between Vikas Manoor and Marcus Stewart.

In County’s reply the Accies’ bowlers made some early inroads, but the hosts coasted to the win.

In Group A the match between Penicuik and Watsonians was off as was the Group C match between Grange and Renfrew. Fauldhouse did lose to Uddingston in the latter group though.

In Group E Umair Mohammad made a promising debut for Carlton at Grange Loan against Poloc before the match was abandoned.

He scored 63 not out in Carlton’s 173-6 in 36 overs, but the rains came with the visitors 15-0 in reply.

In Group F West Lothian’s match with Kelburne never got started and, in Group G, RH Corstorphine got their campaign off to a disappointing start with a 142-run defeat at West of Scotland.

SMRH’s new look team also suffered an opening loss in Group H, going down by five wickets to Clydesdale at Titwood.

Also on Saturday various East League clubs played friendlies ahead of the start of the local season this coming weekend.

Murrayfield DAFS were at Meggetland to take on Boroughmuir and the visitors managed to notch up a 100-run victory. They posted 236 and then bowled out the home side for 136.

And at Inverleith on the artificial wicket the SMRH ‘Trojans’ were defeated by Hillhead in a 25-overs-a-side encounter.

Rich Hanam had scored 42 not out in the hosts’ 113-4, but it was not enough.
