Curling: Brewster takes the spoils

Aberdeen curler Tom Brewster warmed up for next month’s European Championships by retaining his Edinburgh International title at Murrayfield Ice Rink yesterday.

The world silver medallist has been out of sorts this season but roared back to form in Edinburgh, beating Finn Aku Kauste 6-4 in yesterday’s quarter-finals before edging out Perth’s Glen Muirhead 4-3 in the semis. The final was also low-scoring, but Brewster hardly cared as he counted a single at the last end to defeat Hamburg skip John Jahr 3-2.

Edinburgh’s Colin Howden was part of Graeme Black’s Lockerbie rink which topped Group C but then lost 6-5 to Jahr in the quarter-finals despite scoring four at the third end.

Capital curlers John Hamilton, Colin Campbell and Ross Hepburn all missed out on the knockout stages.
