A 6-4 tie-breaker victory over Grant Hardie had maintained his hopes of adding the national senior title to his triumphs earlier this winter in the junior and mixed doubles championships.

The Napier student once again found himself in a sudden-death situation when he took on Murdoch and, although last Sunday’s round-robin tie went to an extra end before Murdoch won 8-7, the Olympic silver medallist was a more convincing winner yesterday. A three at the eighth end opened up a 7-3 lead and handed Mouat his only defeat of the week within the regulation ten ends.

The 21-year-old still has plenty left to play for this season as he will represent Scotland at the World Junior Championships in Copenhagen and the World Mixed Doubles Championship in Sweden (with Murrayfield club-mate Gina Aitken).
