Cycling: Hoy heads for Holland

Capital cycling star Sir Chris Hoy has been listed in a four-man Great Britain sprint squad for this weekend’s European Track Championships in Apeldoorn, Netherlands.

Hoy will be desperate to avoid a repeat of last year’s competition when he suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of unknown Irish teenager Felix English. He is joined by Matt Crampton, defending champion individual sprint Jason Kenny and veteran Jason Queally.

However, there is no place in the team for Hoy’s fellow Scot Ross Edgar, whose hopes of competing in London next year are fading.

The European event carries Olympic qualifying points and the British performance manager Shane Sutton has high expectations for the 15-strong British team saying: “We’re sending a strong team to the Euros and our aim remains to score Olympic qualification points early.”
