City of Edinburgh cyclist Katie Archibald had mixed fortunes at the three-stage Surf n Turf weekend in Blackpool, the latest round of the British Cycling Women’s Series.

She finished the opening day in second spot after taking the honours in the prologue, then crossing the line in fourth spot in the afternoon circuit race.

However, she came to grief in the 84-kilometre road stage yesterday, crashing heavily, although she escaped serious injury.

Eileen Roe, racing for the Breast Cancer Care Cycling Team, finished runner-up overall to Amy Roberts (Honda Wiggle), while Roe’s West Lothian-based colleague Anne Ewing performed solidly throughout the weekend and teenager Louise Borthwick (Edinburgh RC) had an impressive conclusion to a busy week when she made a bold bid for glory on the final stage and held on to clinch ninth in the final standings.

Meanwhile, Evan Oliphant warmed up for next Sunday’s British Road Race Championship with a win at the Hugh Dornan Memorial Road Race in Roseneath after the Team Raleigh rider shrugged off the attentions of Ben Greenwood (Hope Factory Racing) on the final climb of the 80 mile race.
