Carrickvale, four-time winners in the last nine years, are also in that section as well as Harrison, Watsonians and Barnton Hotel, ensuring some tasty early ties in the golfclubs4cash-sponsored event at the Braids.

Hailes, who bridged a 40-year gap by claiming the covered trophy in 2015, are among 20 teams who received byes into the second round, where they will meet Harrison Seniors.

Either Duddingston team Temple Golfing Society or British Rugby Club of Paris will lie in wait if the holders progress to the last 16 before the possibility of facing Silverknowes in the quarter-finals.

Not that Silverknowes, bidding to reclaim the trophy and chalk up a fourth triumph in the last six years, will be taking progress to that stage for granted. Indeed, they will face Carrickvale as early as the second round if both win opening ties against Buckstone Golfing Society and Bank of Scotland.

Victory for the Stephen Gallacher Foundation, a new addition in a 42-team field, over Hailes C will see them in the spotlight against either Carrickvale of Silverknowes in the third round.

The bottom half of the draw features an interesting Braids derby between Harrison B and Edinburgh Western, as is the case in the tie involving Edinburgh Thistle and Ye Monks of Ye Braids.
