The 31-year-old MGM Scotland fighter, who has suffered just one loss in 15 professional bouts, will go head-to-head with Bolton’s Drago, also 31, who has eight wins and a draw so far to his name.

Simmons had previously revealed to the Evening News his desire to contest a title in front of his own fans on Saturday, March 12. However, he believes victory over Drago will put him on the verge of fulfilling his ambition later this year.

“I’m really looking forward to this one,” Simmons said. “He’s a big, strong lad so it’s sure to be a tough one. All respect to him for coming to Edinburgh and putting his unbeaten record on the line. It’s not going to be for a title but it will move me closer to a big fight.

“After speaking with my manager back in Marbella, we will be looking for major titles but the full focus is on this one next month. You can’t look past your next fight. I’ll be ready and am hopeful that I will get a really good turnout from my fans.”

Edinburgh boxers Stephen Tiffney, Lewis Benson, Tommy Philbin, Brian Forsyth and Thomas Dickson will all be in action at Meadowbank.

• Tickets for Rise of the Champions are available from www.ticketmaster.co.uk or any of the boxers on the bill and are priced at £40, £60 for ringside and £100 VIP ringside.
