The Liberton player carded a one-under 64 (33-31) at the Dunbar venue to pip Uphall’s Gordon Law by a shot, with Saltman maintaining his consistent campaign by finishing third on 66.

Saltman (Royal Musselburgh) still tops the scratch Order of Merit standings but Cantley has reduced the gap to just nine points heading into the second half of the season.

On a windy day on the East Lothian coast, the overall prize, the TC Jordan Trophy, was claimed by Borderer David Brydon but only after a countback.

The Torwoodlee six-handicapper and Alan Loughran, who plays off seven at Murrayfield, both carded net 65s but Brydon had a better inward half of 31.5.

In a measure of consolation, Loughran’s effort lifted him into top spot in the handicap Order of Merit, seven points ahead of Cantley with Mortonhall’s John Masterton third on 82.

Masterson shared the seniors on the day with Baberton’s Jimmy Rankeillor on 67 while top trainee was Bathgate’s Chris Curran on 71.

Shot of the day was produced by Musselburgh’s Ian Fyfe, who recorded his first hole-in-one at the 188-yard par-3 11th.

The next event is at Gullane No 3 on January 10.
