Edinburgh kid Harrison living the dream at Wimbledon

Edinburgh teenager Brendan Harrison is following in the footsteps of Andy Murray after winning the chance to play on the hallowed turf at Wimbledon this week.

The St Augustine’s High School pupil is one of just eight Scottish kids who made it through from regional qualifying to compete. Brendan successfully won through from his club at St Serf’s LTC in Trinity before triumphing in the east qualifiers at Dunbar last month.

Every year more than 10,000 young people from over 800 clubs, parks and schools throughout the UK are whittled down to 44 county finals, with just 128 boys and girls qualifying for the national finals at Wimbledon.

Brendan said: “I’ve dreamed of going to Wimbledon but I always thought I’d be going to watch tennis – not to actually play there!

“Wimbledon is such a unique place, to play there has been amazing.”

There was only one problem Brendan had before heading down to London. Just like in the Grand Slam tournament won for a second time by Murray last month, all competitors need to play in white – and the teenager did not have any to wear.

In stepped Capital Cars, Edinburgh’s premier private hire firm, to sponsor the youngster and allow him to be kitted out for the competition.

He added: “Even in practice at Wimbledon you have to wear whites. This is where the sponsorship has really helped because up until a week ago I didn’t own a single piece of white tennis clothing.”
