Edinburgh swimmers aim to make a splash at Scottish Championships

The Scottish National Short Course Open Swimming Championships begin on Friday at the Royal Commonwealth Pool with a number of local athletes involved.

Jack Thorpe will start as one of the favourites in the 50m freestyle

With the Commonwealth Games now just a few months away, it gives those selected a chance to put another important meeting in the bag as part of their preparations for going to Australia.

And for others, it gives them a chance to take a big scalp and show their progress.

The men’s 50m freestyle heats are first up on Friday morning and the University of Edinburgh duo of Jack Thorpe, who is going to Gold Coast, and David Cumberlidge, will start as favourites in the event.

Their club team-mate Corrie Scott, who will be heading to her third Commonwealths in April, will then be next up in the women’s 100m breaststroke.

Heart of Midlothian teenager Keanna MacInnes will be keen to test herself against Olympian Hannah Miley in the women’s 200m individual medley.

And another local young talent, Archie Goodburn, will hope to impress in the men’s 100m butterfly with the University of Stirling’s Duncan Scott the favourite.

The competition runs until Sunday and on all three days there are sessions at 9am, 1.15pm and 5.30pm.
