Extra events boost ahead of Paul Lawrie Match Play

Two spin-off events from the Paul Lawrie Match Play have been announced in the countdown to next month's tournament at Archerfield Links.

The first will see a field of 50 invited professionals, mainly Scottish, battle it out in a qualifier for one spot in the ¤1m main event.

“We will be staging an 18-hole, stroke-play qualifier over the Fidra Course at Archerfield Links on Monday, August 1,” said tournament host Lawrie. “The field for this will be a maximum of 50 invited professionals, mainly Scottish guys playing on the various feeder tours such as the PGA EuroPro, Tartan Tour etc, as well as players supported by my Foundation.”

It will be a similar shoot-out to the one held for the Scottish Open over the past two years to give home-based players a chance to get European Tour experience. The lucky player who qualifies will be get the chance to secure a good pay-day as the first-round winners in the the inaugural Paul Lawrie Match Play at Murcar Links last year walked away with at least ¤16,000.

Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat won that event and the field for Archerfield Links will start to take shape by the end of next week.

Spaniard Pablo Larrazabal, a four-time European Tour winner, tweeted last week that he is definitely heading to East Lothian. Another definite starter is Bathgate star Stephen Gallacher, who is set to
make his return from the wrist injury that ruled him out of the recent big run of events in Europe.

“We should have a good idea of the final field by the end of next week, once invites have been responded to,” added Lawrie.

The second spin-off event will involve juniors and take place on the weekend of the tournament on August 6-7. Four boys and four girls are being invited to play in a Junior Paul Lawrie Matchplay over the same course as the pros.

Again, this will provide a great opportunity for some of the brightest young talents in Scottish golf to gain valuable experience as they compete on a course that is set up for a
European Tour event.

An adult ticket for the Paul Lawrie Match Play costs just £15 – under-18s get in free – and also offers admission to the Prostate Cancer UK Scottish Senior Open, which is taking place at Archerfield Links as well next month.
