Amateurs: Lothian United batter Bathgate in cup

The Sunday Premier Division leaders had a lot of the ball in the opening stages of the game but were denied several times by Thistle goalie Marcus Havern.

Lothian were shocked on the half-hour mark when Thistle went ahead against the run of play, Francis Mahon pinging the ball from 40 yards over the head of United keeper Christopher Robertson.

United turned the game on its head before half time. Ryan Dolan leathered the ball in from Bob McKenzie’s cross to make it 1-1 before Euan Bisset went on a mazy solo run from left back to fire inside the near post for 2-1.

After the break, United ran away with the game in emphatic style. Crease opening his account with a tidy finish in the box before McKenzie blasted in from outside the box to make it 4-1. Crease then found the net twice more to claim his treble with some instinctive finishing in the area.

• Clermiston Star continue on their rise

Clermiston Star maintained their promotion push as they held off a stubborn Penicuik Athletic side to win 4-2 at Penicuik Playing Fields.

Star took the lead early on in the first half. Ryan Wilson got down the right flank before squaring the ball to Lee Heinemeier in the area and, after he fluffed his effort, the ball fell to Michael Langdale to finish from ten yards.

Athletic grabbed an equaliser on the half-hour mark. Kenny Novak intercepted the ball at the heart of the Star defence before sending a composed finish into the goal from just outside the box.

Star ended the half on top and went ahead when Connor Kane leapt to head in a free-kick.

Athletic replied early in the second half. They burst upfield on the counter and Novak again grabbed the goal with a sidefooted effort in the box.

With half an hour to go, Star upped their game and scored two more to seal the result, Lewis Page and Langdale getting on the scoresheet once more. Star sit in fourth place in Lothian East on 24 points but with games in hand over second-placed Barca Milton 97 and third-placed Musselburgh Windsor. Unbeaten St Bernards sit well clear at the top.

• Sandys show guile in win

Sandys got back to winning ways in the Premier Division as they defeated South Gyle 4-1 at Gyle Park.

Sandys took the lead after just two minutes. Tam Crease got in behind the Gyle defence before squaring the ball in the area for Jason Hood to pick his spot from close range. Some slack defending allowed Gyle back into the game just before half-time. Greg Rudkins broke from his marker to nod Gyle level from Neil Ross’ corner. Sandys dominated play in the second half and went back ahead. Crease was in the thick of the action again as he ran through to fire past Peter Flannigan in the Gyle goal.

Sandys made their dominance count with two more goals to kill the game off. Crease netted once more as he followed up Bob McKenzie’s shot to make it 3-1 before Liam Todd scored the goal of the game with a 30-yard screamer.
