Vics started quietly but, after a spell of pressure, they broke the deadlock. Jason Darling’s low corner in from the right met an unmarked Jonathon Flockhart at the front post and he side-footed home for 1-0.

It was a short-lived lead for Vics, though, as Spartans equalised with ten minutes of the half remaining, Daryn Cain had time to shoot on the edge of the box and he whipped the ball into the top right corner to make it 1-1.

It was anyone’s game going into the second half but Vics got off to the perfect start. Grahame Mills’ corner from the left fell to Darling on the edge of the box and he struck a sweet first-time effort into the top-right corner.

Spartans looked to fight back once again but it seemed Polowyj wasn’t going to be beaten as the No.1 pulled off back-to-back saves to deny Spartans. Vics held firm at the back to see out a 2-1 win.

• Balerno still on Logan run

Balerno Athletic made it into the second round of the Logan Cup with a determined 3-0 win over Edinburgh City AFC at Seafield.

The visitors has to dig deep in the early stages as City looked to win the battle in the middle of the park. After City went lose to breaking the deadlock, Balerno opened the scoring. David Dickson drilled a ball into the box and Gregg Smith flicked the ball into the top left corner for 1-0.

The remainder of the half was evenly contested and both sides had good opportunities to make a mark on the scoresheet, but couldn’t take them. Into the second half, Balerno showed some improved finishing to put themselves out of reach. Smith showed composure in front of goal to double his tally as he glanced a header from a deep free-kick into the City goal.

Balerno soaked up the City pressure in response and eventually grabbed a third to kill the game off. An intricate passing move from deep was eventually finished off as Finlay Blair latched on to Smith’s pass to steer the ball in from close range.

Lochend beat Borderers in cup

Lochend progressed to the second round of the Scottish Amateur Cup with a 3-1 victory over Tweeddale Rovers at The Gytes Playing Fields. The cup tie began in fairly even fashion with both sides cancelling each other out. Tweeddale’s Scott Devlin was the first to go close as he raced through on goal, only for his shot to be well saved by Lochend goalie Davy Duncan.

As the half wore on, Lochend gradually managed to get a foothold. They persevered in attack and were rewarded with 30 minutes played. Tadg Moriarty produced a pinpoint cross from the left for Kevin Kesson to bullet a header into the bottom right corner.

Lochend doubled their advantage early on in the second half. Matty Hunter chased down a through ball in behind the defence to fire in for 2-0.

With five minutes to play, Tweeddale set up a tense finish for the Edinburgh side as Stuart Mullins poached a goal back in the area. Lochend held off the resulting late rally for an equaliser and sealed victory in the final few minutes. Kevin Mackie teed up Brian Anderson on the break and he tapped in to make it 3-1.
