In what was expected to be a tight affair in the Premier Division, Thistle started strongly and never looked back, racking up four goals before half-time. After battling for possession in the early stages, they broke the deadlock nine minutes in, scoring with their first shot on target. Wight latched onto goalie John Nisbet’s long ball down the middle, ran through on goal and blasted the ball past Willie Turner in the Vics goal.

Vics tried to respond by playing a more direct style but unfortunately they could do little in the final third and so Thistle responded. Stephen Devine rattled the woodwork before Michael Yuill doubled the lead after a neat one-two with Scott Millar.

Despite being subdued, Vics battled for a foothold and they caught Thistle napping at the back to score a goal minutes later. Stuart Kidd exploited some space in the final third of the field and played the ball for Kevin Stewart to slot in from the left side of the box.

The hope was to be brief for Vics, however, as Thistle ran riot at the end of the first half with two more well-worked goals. Wight doubled his tally for the afternoon as he sent a composed finish into the goal when played in behind the Vics defence. Then, with half-time approaching, Vics allowed Thistle in once again. Minutes after hitting the post, Wight secured his third and his team’s fourth when a ball into the box wasn’t cleared, allowing the striker to score from six yards.

Vics tried to begin the second 45 better than they started the first but any hope of them getting back into the game was quickly extinguished. A minute after the restart, Thistle got a fantastic fifth. Wight was the man again to get on the scoresheet to take his tally to four, as he exploited some lacklustre defending to beat the offside and trap and slot in.

With the game over as a contest, both teams took their foot off the gas briefly. With Vics’ heads down, Thistle found another four goals.

Substitute Iliya Stoev crossed from the right for Sean Mossman to get his name on the scorers’ list with a well-taken half volley.

Then, five minutes later, Thistle made it 7-1 as again Stoev created danger down the left and Piesy Khosrowpour cut his cross back across goal for Kyle Hay to volley in. Despite the emphatic scoreline, Thistle added three more when Mossman, Khosrowpour and Jaime Begbie all provided clinical finishes from close range to take the scoreline into double figures.

Wight said: “The whole team put in a good solid performance and created a lot of chances, managing to take the majority of them, and getting us the all important three points. On a personal note, it was nice to grab myself a few goals, but the credit really needs to go to my team-mates who provided the service.”
