Bonnyrigg bounce back to the top of the Super League

And it was all thanks to a piece of magic from midfield stalwart Davy Burrell. His goal just after the half hour was enough to take the Rose to top spot on goal difference from Hill Of Beath.

“We’re in pole position now,” said manager Max Christie after a demanding 90 minutes. “They are a very good side. Our lads played out their skins, because they had to. We dug in when we needed to. They had the bulk of the possession in the first half but we changed our tactics at the break and were more of a force in the second 45 minutes. Davy’s goal was brilliant and settled us nicely.”

Burrell’s goal was something to savour. Stevie Thomson took a free kick just inside the Kelty half which the home defence cleared to the 18 yard line. Burrell came forward and forced himself onto the ball before drilling a right-foot shot past Alan Fleming in the Kelty goal.

Sean Grady, already suffering from an injured foot, let frustration boil over in the second half as Kelty pegged Bonnyrigg back and was red carded for a double booking near the end.

But Bonnyrigg held out and are out Lochee Utd on Saturday, while Hill of Beath, who are out of the title race play at Bo’ness.
