Broxburn new signing Dalrymple makes an instant impact

Broxburn found their best form after a string of poor results in beating Super League title contenders Penicuik 2-1, with the winning goal coming from new signing Darren Dalrymple.

For Broxburn boss Max Christie is was a relief to get points back in the bag. “It was a good result against a good side. We hit the woodwork three times so the score could have been a whole lot heavier. Darren Dalrymple has settled in nicely and is getting used to the way we play. Hopefully we’ve had our bad spell and we’ll look to kick on from here.”

Broxburn were the more impressive side from the kick-off and took a deserved lead after 14 minutes. A long ball played through the middle was controlled by Dalrymple who delivered a super pass to Kieron Anderson in the old inside left position. He took one touch before drilling the ball into the net.

For the rest of the half Dalrymple and Anderson pushed the Penicuik defence hard looking to add to their tally but keeper Youssef Bejaoui was in fine form.

A half-time rollicking from boss Craig Miekle saw a more determined Penicuik come out for the second 45 minutes. They equalised in the 52nd minute from a free kick. Neil Janczyk stepped up with a dipping effort which keeper Gavin King spilled allowing Daryl Devlin to pounce and prod the ball home.

Broxburn regained the lead only a couple of minutes later after a howler from keeper Bejaoui. A high bouncing ball was played into the penalty box with the Penicuik defence waiting for him to come out and claim it. He hesitated and the ball bounced over his head. Dalrymple stepped in and smashed the ball into the net.

Broxburn took control with Dalrymple and Anderson again causing problems.

Dalrymple said: “It’s been a great move for me and I’m delighted we got the points. I was a long time at Armadale and I loved the club but I wanted to play in the Super League and this move to Broxburn has worked out really well. Today I got the winner but everyone played their part so as the boss says hopefully we can kick on from here.”

Miekle said: “Broxburn made it hard for us in the first half but we spoke about it at half-time and we stepped up a gear in the second. After we equalised we gave away a really soft goal and that made the difference.”
