City aiming for yet another Highland sting

Edinburgh CITY are looking to keep an impressive Scottish Cup record intact when they host Highland League outfit Brora Rangers in the Capital tomorrow.

The Meadowbank side, who reached the fourth round of Scotland’s top cup competition three years ago, have never failed to pass the first hurdle since the Scottish Cup format was revised for the 2007/08 season, defeating Highland League opposition on five separate occasions. However, despite that robust record, City co-manager Gary Jardine is refusing to rest on his laurels.

“We’ve done our homework,” said Jardine. “John [Green, Edinburgh City co-manager] has been up to see Brora. They’ve got a lot of new players – some very good players – but there’s been a lot of chopping and changing to the team. Given the trip they have to make it may be the case that some players cannot make the match due to work commitments, but I’m sure they will all do their best to make the match. We’re just happy to have a home draw. We know we’ve had a good record against Highland League clubs in recent years but records are there to be broken, and we’re under no illusion that tomorrow will pose a tough test.”

Brora currently sit third from bottom of the Highland League this season and are yet to register a win on their travels. However, the team from Sutherland, who beat Edinburgh University in the first round last season, are not being underestimated by City’s management team.

“Brora’s results may have been patchy at the start of the season, but they’re a good side without a doubt,” concluded Jardine.

“If they were playing in the East of Scotland league, I think they’d be a top-five club.”
