Craig Levein: Jamie Walker wants to leave Hearts

Jamie Walker has told Hearts management he would like to leave Tynecastle, director of football Craig Levein has revealed.

The attacking midfielder, who still has over 12 months left remaining on his current deal, told head coach Ian Cathro that he believes it’s the right time to move on.

Walker netted 15 goals this past season for a Hearts side that struggled to fifth place in the league table.

“There comes a point with every player if we get an offer that’s deemed to be acceptable then we’ll look at that,” admitted Levein.

“Ian has gone through quite an extensive discussion with Jamie about staying. He said he’s been here a long time and he feels like it’s time for him to move on. These are circumstances that happen.”

Asked about his manager, Levein backed Cathro to turn things around at the Gorgie Road club, saying Hearts are willing to be patient.

“There’s been quite a furore surrounding Ian’s appointment and subsequent matches. People have been very quick to pick holes in his results which, in the business we’re in is going to happen,” said Levein.

“One thing we have is patience. We believe the experience he has gained in the last five months will hold him in good stead going into next season.

“Looking forward, my interest is in giving Ian the best possible chance of being successful next season. What’s happened we can learn from. It’s been a bit of a baptism of fire for him but we’ll support him.

“Is he under pressure? Not as far as I’m aware. We’re very confident we’ve got the right guy.”
