“It was a poor game with both teams waiting for something to happen,” said Star manager Alan Miller at full-time. “It looked like a no-scoring draw until Thommo did the business.

“However, his booking means he’s over the threshold, and that’s a four-game ban coming up.

“It was a poor first half, but we lifted our game after half-time and were a lot better.”

The opening 45 minutes were indeed poor – but things brightened up slightly after the break, with Newtongrange taking the lead just four minutes after the restart.

They won a free-kick out on the left wing. Up stepped Thomson and sent over a looping effort, which deceived everyone and landed in the corner of the net.

Newtongrange bagged their second from a hotly-disputed penalty in the 83rd minute after David Morris was sent crashing to the ground by both Don Morrison and keeper Scott Christie in the box.

The referee ruled the offence was caused by Christie and he was shown a straight red card. Fraser Keast was subbed for Chris Donnelly, who took over in goal before Thomson scored easily from the spot.

Afterwards Bo’ness boss Alan McGonigal said: “The referee had a horrendous day. It was a bad mistake in sending Christie off because it was Don Morrison who fouled the player but Renton was well offside
beforehand.

“I feel sorry for the players because they didn’t deserve that result.”
