The Scotland Under-21 midfielder had been out of action since tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in a pre-season friendly at Berwick in early July.

After an operation to repair the damage, Handling underwent a gruelling rehabilitation programme before returning to full training with Alan Stubbs’ squad recently and was a surprise substitute for the League Cup final.

Handling played the first 45 minutes of yesterday’s Development League game won by Aaron Dunsmore’s 15th-minute strike.
