Defenders shine in Hearts' Player of the Year awards

Four defenders were honoured at Hearts' Player of the Year awards ceremony on Sunday night.

Club captain Christophe Berra was named Players’ Player of the Year and Fans’ Player of the Year, while his central defensive partner John Souttar picked up the Young Player of the Year gong.

On-loan Manchester City defender Demetri Mitchell picked up the Goal of the Season prize for his strike against St Johnstone in the Scottish Cup.

The 21-year-old said on Twitter: “Thanks to everyone that voted. Hopefully get back from injury and can play again for Hearts before the end of the season.”

Chris Hamilton, the 16-year-old full back who has been among the substitutes for the last two matches, was crowned Under-20s Player of the Year.

Striker Sean Ward picked up the Under-17s Player of the Year award while the Memorable Moment of the Season was the 4-0 win over Celtic at Tynecastle in December that brought the Hoops’ unbeaten run to an emphatic end.

Berra was the clear winner in a poll run by the Evening News last week, picking up 59 per cent of the vote with Jon McLaughlin a distant second with 29 per cent.

Kyle Lafferty and John Souttar got 5 per cent and 4 per cent respectively to come third and fourth.
