East of Scotland: Tynecastle delighted to begin with win

Tynecastle boss Steven Vinter says he was thrilled to kick off the league campaign with a win on Saturday '“ because he had a four-week wait for his first three points last season.

The Capital side romped to a 4-0 win in the East of Scotland League over hosts Peebles Rovers at Whitestone Park at the weekend – Dayne Robertson and Dean Crabbe both grabbing a brace down in the Borders.

Vinter is now urging his players to build on their win having had a real battle to secure a fourth-place finish last season following a disappointing start that included a run of three consecutive defeats to Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale, Spartans and Coldstream.

“We started the campaign so poorly last year and then got stronger as the season went on so it’s good to get off to a good start and get the first points on the board,” Vinter said. “We’re not looking too much on last year but we lost our first three games so we were playing catch up for the rest of the season. It was imperative that didn’t happen this time round.

“Anybody that goes down to Peebles knows they’re not in for an easy afternoon. They’ve got a really good squad and I love what they are doing there in terms of having the local guys playing for the local team and starting a new project.

“To come away with three points after a 4-0 victory, we’re over the moon. It’s a good one for us to get out of the way because they’re only going to get better. I think they’ll take points off the other teams and will have a decent season. We know that when we hit our levels there is a lot we can do. I thought the boys applied themselves really well. We just need to take each game as it comes now and see where we end up come May.”

Elsewhere, Heriot-Watt University are through to the Alex Jack Cup semi-finals following a 4-1 win at Tweedmouth Rangers. The students will now meet Tynecastle or Eyemouth United, who play their tie on Saturday, in the competition’s last four. Lothian Thistle set up their semi-final clash with Peebles Rovers after a 4-1 victory over Ormiston.
