Edinburgh City boss believes team deserved better at Elgin

Shane Sutherland continued his habit of scoring against City by notching the winner on the hour mark.

That leaves City with one win from their opening two League Two games. “I don’t think we were at our best, but I don’t think we deserved to lose the game if I’m being honest,” he said. “We maybe didn’t do enough to win but there was nothing in the game and the first goal was always going to be decisive. We were just a bit unfortunate. We hit the bar and even when they scored we were in the ascendency, we just didn’t do enough to score. We just need to learn from it.”

McDonaugh was keen to keep his players’ feet on the ground following the opening day 4-0 win over Albion Rovers, and the result in the Highlands illustrated why. “People get excited and say it’s a great start to the season but it’s just one game,” he said. “That’s not me playing mind games or anything, I’m pretty realistic.

“We had a good win against Albion Rovers but it’s a long, difficult journey to Elgin and we’ve come away losing by a single goal. It’s not a disaster though. We’re a new team and we just have to keep sticking to what we’re trying to do.

“I think Elgin will take points off of plenty teams although it’ll be a different game when they come down to us. We’ve just got to congratulate them them and address the things that we weren’t very good at.”
