If City’s players had spent the last two days partying following Saturday’s promotion to League Two, it certainly didn’t show in the early stages. Ross Allum willingly scampered after Shaun Harrison’s long ball before cutting inside and seeing his shot deflected wide of Ben McGinley’s goal.

Daniel McKinlay, one of six under-20 players in the Welfare squad, then went close with a drive from distance.

Welfare’s Craig Anderson was inches from scoring after the break when he hit the post.

Jus as a stalemate looked inevitable, Gordon Donaldson nodded home Shaun Harrison’s corner for the winner.
