The Minstermen, who are managed by former Dundee United and Partick manager Jackie McNamara, are fighting relegation to the National League and are set to give Riordan a run-out in Tuesday night’s North Riding Senior Cup tie at Guisborough Town.

Riordan had been training with Hibs up until the turn of the year as he looked to get himself fit and find a new club.

The 33-year-old former Celtic and Scotland striker last played a competitive match in May for East Fife, but McNamara feels he can make an impact at Bootham Crescent.

“We need to see if we can get Derek fit because he’s not played a lot of games recently,” he said. “I’ve no doubt about the ability, quality and experience he possesses.

“He just needs to show us that he is sharp enough. If he is, he could give us a bit of quality in that final third.

“He doesn’t carry a lot of weight and has a good level of fitness but tomorrow’s game, if it goes ahead because it’s in doubt due to the weather, will show us how sharp he is. He’s been to different countries and played one game this season for a small team in Scotland as a favour for their manager, but he’s looking to get back into the game and he’s trained with us a week now.

“Anybody who looks at clips of his goals will see that he has ability with both feet and with free kicks. He can also hold the ball and up and has the vision to pick the right pass for people running in behind defences to hurt teams.

“If he still has the hunger and sharpness, then he can do well for us.”
