Getting pelters will boost Bonnyrigg star at Bo'ness

Bonnyrigg Rose midfielder Adam Nelson will relish the frosty reception he'll receive when the Super League leaders visit Bo'ness United at Newtown Park tomorrow afternoon.

Nelson spent five years up the road at Bo’ness’s fierce rivals Linlithgow Rose prior to making the switch to New Dundas Park in the summer, so he’s no stranger to receiving flak off the BU support having played his part in countless derbies.

He revealed that getting stick spurs him on more, and with Bo’ness four points adrift of Rose having played three games more, he’s determined to kill off their title hopes by securing all three points.

“When I was at Linlithgow I always used to get asked about my favourite fixture and I always said Bo’ness away,” said the 31-year-old. “I don’t know what it is about the atmosphere, they are a well supported club like Linlithgow and there’s always loads of supporters there. I think it brings out the best in me, I prefer playing away from home. I’ll be expecting a bit of stick, I’ll just take it in my stride, if you are getting a bit of stick you must be a half decent player.

“It’s a must win for them, but we’ll be going there aiming to take all three points. We won’t be playing for a draw, we’ll be going there quietly confident.

“The bottle starts now, we’ve got to go and produce the goods. It starts tomorrow at Bo’ness because they are up there every season challenging for every trophy and we need to go and show them we are title contenders for real.”

Bonnyrigg are in command of their title destiny. They are unbeaten in the league since August – a run of 16 games without defeat and with just 11 games to left to play. Their first league crown since season 2011-12 is on the horizon.

Title isn’t a buzzword within the New Dundas Park dressing-room however, with Rose boss Robbie Horn keen to keep a lid on any talk in public of securing the championship.

Nelson, who lifted the Super League once in his time at Prestonfield, revealed he hasn’t even been looking at the table and was taken by surprise when informed of his side’s lead at the league summit.

He said: “I’ve not had a look at the table, I’ve tried not to really look at it. It’s a bit like Leicester in the Premier League, we’re just taking each game as it comes and the manager is not really wanting us speaking about it.

“Don’t get me wrong, before the game he’s like ‘We’re at the top for a reason and the league table doesn’t lie, you need to go and show them that’s why you’re top of the league’. We just need to take care of business tomorrow, I think if we win and results go our way it could be a big weekend for us.”

Last season’s champions Kelty Hearts, who sit third, are on cup duty so Bonnyrigg have the chance to extend their lead over their title challengers to eight points. Linlithgow lie fourth and visit Hill of Beath tomorrow. They are still in the mix, although realistically they would need to win every one of their remaining league games to be in with a shout.

Lithgae, the last team to beat Bonnyrigg in the league, have yet to host the league leaders at Prestonfield. Nelson is looking forward to returning to his former stomping round in the next couple of months, although he hopes the fixture won’t take place towards the end of the campaign, with a possible dream scenario for the former Blackburn Rovers youth player.

He added: “I’m looking forward to going back there and hopefully we can turn them over; winning the league there would be the icing on the cake.”
