Officials from both clubs are keen to arrange a glamour match later next month, which would reunite the Hearts head coach Ian Cathro with his former manager Rafa Benitez.

Cathro was an assistant to Benitez at St James' Park before he left to take up his first managerial job in Edinburgh last December. Newcastle won promotion to England's top flight in May and would be certain to bring a strong following north.

Hearts must first secure police approval for the game as a date has yet to be finalised. However, both clubs are hopeful the friendly will take place. If so, only three stands would be open at Tynecastle whilst the ground's new main stand is under construction.

Hearts have arranged another friendly during their trip to Ireland in the first week of July. They will now play St Patrick's Athletic on Wednesday, July 5, at Richmond Park (7.45pm kick-off). They then head to Belfast to face Linfield on Saturday, July 8.
