Craig Levein has emerged as the leading candidate as Hearts prepare to name their new head coach.

The director of football has become bookmakers’ favourite to replace Ian Cathro, who was sacked at the beginning of the month following a wretched run of results.

Former Hearts stars Steven Pressley and Paul Hartley have been interviewed for the post while Steve McClaren and Billy Davies were candidates before dropping out of the race.

Under-20s coach Jon Daly has steadied the ship on an interim basis since Cathro’s dismissal but Levein – who was Hearts boss between 2000 and 2004 – is now odds-on to be handed the role by owner Ann Budge.

Here, we look at reaction to the development on social media ...

Jamie Devlin on Twitter: “If this was always going to be the outcome, why not just have Levein put himself in charge from the minute Cathro got punted?”

Andy Dickson on Twitter: So Craig Levein looks to be appointing himself as Hearts manager. As a manager he did well .. third for two seasons in a row..

Steven on Twitter: “Going against the grain here but I’d be happy with Levein as manager. He’s better than all the other managers we’ve been linked with imo.”

Nigel Bell on Twitter: “Definite No! Ann making a mistake appointing Levein. On the other hand, poor results he may get punted out of Hearts!!!”

John Cowan on Twitter: “Give it interim to Levein, punt Jamie Walker and use his money as compensation to get a decent manager.”

SeeBeeGee on Twitter: “Not too bothered if it’s Levein. Just disappointed it’s taken three weeks to get to this stage. If he fails will he get punted totally, though?”

Simmy on Twitter: “A four-week search for Ian Cathro’s replacement and we could have Craig Levein installed as new gaffer? When will the nightmare end?”

Ross Anderson on Twitter: “Would rather Levein steadies the ship than bringing Pressley back. His style may not have been pretty, but it worked.”

James Mullins on Twitter: “Levein is head and shoulders above all other coaches in the SPL (barring Rodgers). He would set us back on track quickly.”

Douglas Archibald on Twitter: “We aren’t getting the Levein of 15 years ago. People trying to dress this up as a good thing ...”

Scott Johnson on Twitter: “The major issue I’d have with Levein giving himself the Hearts job would be the fact it would set back the Director of Football role.”

Lady J on Twitter: “So, if Levein becomes next Hearts boss, if it doesn’t work out, does he get sacked or go back to his cushy DoF role?”

Joanne Fallon on Twitter: “The last few weeks have just been bizarre. It’s not been handled well at all. Not thrilled by Levein, but will support the team.”
