Daniel Stendel sends message to Hearts fans about 'wonderful club'

The German was replaced by former Tynecastle boss Robbie Neilson on Sunday

Daniel Stendel sent Hearts fans a goodbye message following the club’s decision not to renew his contract.

The German revealed that he only found about Robbie Neilson’s appointment on Sunday night when it was announced with the club later apologising for not informing him of their choice.

Stendel signed a two-and-a-half year deal in December when he took over with Hearts avoiding bottom spot on goal difference, but the contract had a break clause for either side if the club were relegated.

The 46-year-old admitted earlier this month that he was keen to stay, even with the club likely to be in the second tier.

With Hearts taking the decision to bring back Neilson and Stendel now free to move elsewhere, he sent a message to the fans.

“Due to Covid-19 and the decision of the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) to stop the league and Heart of Midlothian into the Championship my contract at the Hearts is not valid any more,” he wrote.

“Although my stay at this wonderful club was rather short (and much shorter than I expected) I really appreciated working for that club. I was working trustfully together with the board, enjoyed that city and the enthusiastic supporters and sportive-wise we were on the right track also.

“Unfortunately we couldn’t follow up and continue our path together.

“I wish this great club, all their employees and fans all the best for the future, hopefully you can promote shortly again and we will see each other again one day at Tynecastle.

“Stay safe and healthy everybody!”

Already, the fans of third tier German side Meppen have petitioned to have Stendel installed as their new boss and he remains open with regards to his next challenge.

“I see myself at a club that is enthusiastic, has fan potential and sports ambitions,” he told Kicker.

“I remain open to everything. One thing is clear: the previous experience abroad has been a benefit for me in many ways.”
