An exceptionally young Hearts side lost 5-0 to Dunfermline in last night’s Under-20 league clash at East End Park.

With the first team needing most of the Under-20 players for tonight’s Scottish Premiership match against St Mirren at Tynecastle, Robbie Neilson had to field a highly inexperienced side that included many of Hearts’ Under-17 squad.

The home team dominated the first half, scoring through Ryan Thomson, with a header on 16 minutes, a Ross Millen shot on 27 minutes and a Jordan Moore header on the stroke of half-time. Hearts improved after the break, with Robbie Buchanan, Rhys Craigie and Angus Beith all going close.

The Pars finished strongly, though, adding further goals through Scott Mercer, with a lob from the edge of the box on 74 minutes, and new signing Jonathan Page, who headed home in 88 minutes.

Dunfermline: Goodfellow; Millen, O’Kane (Thomas 80), Page, Drummond, Graham, Mercer, Spence, Thomson (McMillan 77), Moore, El Bakhtaoui (Forrest 80).

Hearts: Hamilton, L Smith, K Wilson, G Page, Ford, McKirdy (Flanaghan 46), Simpson (Queen 85), Beith, A Scott, Craigie (Daniel 85), Buchanan.
