A Hearts Under-20s side featuring several first-team stars slumped to a disappointing 2-0 defeat by their St Mirren counterparts.

Scott Gallacher, Kevin McHattie, Brad McKay, Miguel Pallardo and Dale Carrick were given game time last night against a less-experienced Paisley outfit.

Hearts had the first effort on goal after 12 minutes, a Sean McKirdy shot saved by goalkeeper Dan Wilks. Less than 60 seconds later, a mistake in the Hearts defence led to Lewis Morgan latching onto a short pass-back and angling a shot past Gallacher.

Pallardo fired a shot narrowly over the bar straight after half-time before Hearts had to thank Gallacher for half-a-dozen fine saves.

Hearts were struggling to break down a well-organised defence, but almost snatched an equaliser on 72 minutes when Carrick’s downward header from a Liam Smith cross bounced agonisingly over the crossbar.

St Mirren completed the victory when substitute Josh Beattie shot home from just outside the 18-yard box.

Hearts: Gallacher, L Smith, Gordon, McKay, McHattie, Buchanan, Pallardo, McKirdy, Beith, Henderson (Flanagan 46), Carrick (Roy 76). Unused subs: Brown, I Smith, Page.
