Mamadou Thiam's proposed move to Hearts has stalled with time running out ahead of tonight's midnight signing deadline.

Tynecastle officials are in talks with Stoke City about a possible deal to take striker Conor Washington to England, whilst defender Christophe Berra has a decision to make on his future.

Senegalese forward Thiam spent the day mulling over a loan offer from Hearts but his club, Barnsley, have been dragging their heels. Sources close to the player are not expecting him to move to Scotland, although Hearts will not give up hope of a late development this evening.

Manager Daniel Stendel wants to strengthen his forward line but attempts to recruit Wolfsburg's Charles-Jesaja Herrmann have not materialised. The Blackburn Rovers forward Dominic Samuel was also of interest to the Edinburgh club but he is unlikely to leave Ewood Park in this window.

Stoke are keen to sign Washington and Hearts are willing to let the Northern Ireland internationalist leave if they can reach a suitable agreement with the English Championship club.

Washington arrived last summer and has two goals from 13 club appearances this season. He will remain part of Stendel's first-team squad if Stoke cannot finalise a deal in time.

Meanwhile, Dundee remain hopeful of signing Berra but the player himself had yet to commit to any transfer as of late afternoon. He has a number of options and must decide whether to move or stay at Hearts, where he is not in Stendel's plans.

Marcel Langer, the German midfielder, joined Hearts earlier today from Schalke 04. He signed a contract until the end of the season but Stendel would like one more new face if possible.
