Hearts ended an 11-year wait to win the East of Scotland Shield by beating Hibs 3-1 at Tynecastle.

Goals by Dale Baxter, Russell McLean and Euan Henderson secured the trophy – contested at Under-18 level this year – for the Jambos, who had seen their city rivals win the annual match for the past ten seasons.

After a goalless first half – Hibs’ Kevin Waugh seeing a header ruled out for offside – Ian Smith almost put Hearts ahead but his superb 25-yard drive struck the crossbar.

The breakthrough came for the Jambos in the 52nd minute. McLean burst down the right before finding Baxter, who took a touch before smashing a shot beyond Hibs goalkeeper Grant Goodfellow. Hearts grabbed their second on 65 minutes. This time Baxter made the run and his cut-back from the right found McLean, who tapped home from close range.

A minute later, Hibs pulled a goal back. Jamie Gullane dispossessed Smith inside the box and found the net from six yards.

But, with seven minutes remaining, Hearts made sure of the win with their third goal.

Daniel Baur headed back across goal from a corner and Henderson popped up on the line to touch the ball home.
