It was understood they tried to use Christophe Berra, who is no longer in the plans of Hearts boss Daniel Stendel, as part of the deal.
The former Hibs winger's switch to Pittodrie was confirmed by Aberdeen late on Wednesday evening, signing a three-year deal.
The Dons were hopeful of getting him in the door before the month is out, but with St Johnstone and Tommy Wright desperate to keep the player, he won't make the move until the summer.
