HEARTS UNDER-20s, with fringe first-team players Liam Smith and Sean McKirdy plus coach Liam Fox in their line-up, lost out 2-0 to their Dunfermline counterparts in the Development League at East End Park.

Trailing to an early first-half goal, two incidents midway through the second half proved crucial. Dario Zanatta appeared to be tripped in the box by a Pars defender but no penalty was given. Shortly afterwards, the young Jambo netted a loose ball spilled by goalkeeper Cammy Gill only for the referee to disallow the goal.

The hosts had opened the scoring on three minutes, skipper James Thomas netting trialist Shaun Rooney’s right-wing cross from close range.

The Pars began the second half strongly with Rhys McCabe and Thomas having shots saved by Kelby Mason.

Hearts were still in the game until five minutes from time when Thomas added his second goal, a close-range header from a Wallace free-kick.

Hearts: Mason; L Smith, Jones, Howlett-Mundle, Reid, Morrison (Baxter 84), McKirdy, Fox, I Smith (McLean 74), Moore (Flanagan 50), Zanatta.
