After returning to Tynecastle Park on a season-long loan from Manchester United, the Englishman admitted he has unfinished business in Edinburgh.

Mitchell played 11 times on loan at Hearts last season but spent two months injured with a torn meniscus. Now he wants to rebuild momentum and impress supporters with his ability once more.

Having been converted from left wing to left-back two years ago, he could line up in an attacking role for Hearts this season with Ben Garuccio impressing at full-back.

Mitchell declared he is eager to get started after being given Milinkovic’s squad number. “Hopefully I can show a bit of flair. I used to wear No.11 when I was younger because I used to be a winger. That’s my favourite number. I was born on the 11th so it’s a good number for me,” he said in an interview on Hearts TV.

“I had a good spell here last season and I feel like I’ve got unfinished business because I got a little injury, so it’ll be good to get playing again at Hearts.

“The fans were great, the manager was great with me and that’s the reason I’ve come back. I’ve had a good experience and if I didn’t then I wouldn’t be back here.

“For me, the manager and Austin made it very clear from day one that I’d be welcome back to come on loan. They made me feel welcome.

“I knew I would get game time here, even though starting is not definite because they’ve made a lot of signings. Competition for places is good. I had a few options but I’m here now and that’s what I want to focus on.”

Mitchell is the 15th summer arrival at Riccarton after extending his Manchester United contract until 2020. He spent pre-season on tour with United in America but has been watching closely as Craig Levein’s side started the new campaign strongly.

“I’ve been monitoring how Hearts have been doing since I left, really. I kind of fell in love with the club,” continued the 21-year-old. “We’re top of the league, beat Celtic 1-0, so things are great.

“It’s massive to play in front of crowds. It’s massive to play for points. It’s not just playing reserve games or youth games. Points mean something to a lot of people. It’s important to get that experience. I’ve got a few under my belt but I need to get more.

“The injury was a down side but there is still more to come from me and that’s what I want to show everyone.”
