Former Hearts midfielder Jason Holt has signed a three-year contract with Rangers.

he 22-year-old has completed his move to Ibrox following a trial after Hearts accepted a development fee offer on Tuesday night.

Holt had rejected a new contract with his boyhood club after falling out of favour last season.

Holt netted seven goals in 70 appearances for Hearts but went out on loan to Sheffield United in January in search of a regular start. The former Scotland Under-21 international hit five goals in 16 games for the Blades but saw his hopes of securing a permanent move hit by the sacking of manager Nigel Clough.

But he is now excited about the prospect of working under Mark Warburton at Ibrox.

Holt said: “I think the style of play that is coming in is really exciting and if you asked anyone they would like to be a part of this.

“Throughout people’s careers you come and go so I am just delighted to get this done and finally be here.

“It did hurt a wee bit leaving Tynecastle, I am a Hearts fan but it is part of football and now I am a Rangers player and my full focus is on this club.

“When the situation arose that I had an opportunity to come to Rangers I just jumped at it.

“I’ve been really impressed from the moment I came in the door, I spoke to a few of the boys and they were saying the same and as soon as I got a taste of it myself I just thought the same.

“I wanted to get something done straight away and thankfully it has transpired that way and the club is definitely going in the right direction.”

Holt played in Rangers’ 1-0 friendly defeat by Burnley at Ibrox on Tuesday night and former defender and coach John Brown was encouraged by his first sight of Warburton’s team. Rangers also started with six summer signings – Wes Foderingham, Danny Wilson, Rob Kiernan, James Tavernier, Andy Halliday and Martyn Waghorn – as Rangers fell to a goal from former Falkirk midfielder Scott Arfield.
