He wrote: “I would like to thank Heart of Midlothian for everything they have done for me on and, more importantly, off the pitch. Stood by me at the toughest of times I’ve had to date and it was made easier having amazing people behind me supporting me.

“My team-mates, wow, could be up there with one of the best groups I’ve played with.

“I’ve made some amazing friends for life and I believe this could be an exciting year for them.

“And to the most important people at the club, the fans, I’m speechless at how you all took to me even through my tough times and not so good performances.

“You all sat there singing my name and made me feel wanted from day one. And trust me, there’s no feeling like it for a footballer knowing you’ve got the fans on your side.

“You will all be missed. I hope I will always be welcome back to Tynecastle as someone who gave 110 per cent in every game .

“There was only ever going to be one team that was going to get my head turned and I hope the memories I gave you all will live with you for a long, long time because they will for me.”
