Morgaro Gomis admits he would have laughed last summer if anyone suggested Hearts would be 13 points clear of Rangers by January.
Their sizeable advantage in the Scottish Championship table could not have been predicted but Gomis stressed that they fully deserve to be so far in front.
The two teams meet at Ibrox tonight knowing a Hearts win would put them out of Rangers’ sight in the title race. The Glasgow club need three points badly if they are to have any chance of reeling in their Edinburgh rivals, who have yet to suffer a league defeat under head coach Robbie Neilson.
Gomis, an influential central midfielder, conceded that he would have reacted with disbelief if someone had put such a scenario to him during pre-season. “I would probably have laughed but that’s football, anything can happen,” said the Senegalese internationalist. “We work really hard during the week and I think we deserve to be where we are just now.”
He also feels Hearts can become even stronger during the closing months of the campaign. “There’s more to come. Some of the boys are coming back from injury so they will be pushing for places and there is good competition. There is more to come from us, definitely,” added Gomis.
