ROBBIE NEILSON admitted that he has now made his decision on who his captain will be for the upcoming Ladbrokes Premiership season – but has made it clear that we wants several leaders on the pitch, regardless of who has the armband.
The Hearts boss was reluctant to reveal the name of the player that will assume the responsibility following Danny Wilson’s departure in the summer, but stressed the need for collective leadership from his senior players.
Morgaro Gomis Alim Ozturk and Neil Alexander are all thought to be front runners, and while new recruit Blazej Augustyn donned the armband in last night’s 2-0 win at Raith, Neilson will inform the players of his selection in the coming days.
“I know who it’s going to be and I’m speaking to the boys at the moment about it,” he said.
“I’ve made my decision, but there will be a wee group of them that will assist the captain as well. It’s important that it’s not just one guy who leads the team – there will be three of four of them.
“Blazej was the captain last night and then Neil took over – two guys who are really experienced – but we’ve got a lot of experience throughout the team.
“There’s Gomis and Buaben who have been captains at other clubs so it it’s one of them, they’ll be able to lead the team.”
The Hearts boss admitted that his chosen man will have a tough act to follow in Danny Wilson. “Danny lead the team to the league last year so they are big shoes to fill,” he added. “I’d rather do it with the team and make a decision together – I know what I want to do, so as long as the team are happy with that as well.”
