The Hibees had been looking to close the gap on the SWPL1 leaders but the loss at New Douglas Park means Rangers’ 3-1 win at home to Forfar Farmington was enough for them to leapfrog Hibs into second spot.

Hibs manager Chris Roberts said “We are really disappointed with the result and performance. City played very tight and compact which was difficult for us but we know we can play a lot better and we will look to rectify this going forward.”

Hibs went behind after 22 minutes after Fiona Brown’s ball into the box was turned into the net by a Hibs defender. Brown once again showed skill on the wing to set up second-half substitute Sarah Crilly to complete the scoring with a header.

Meanwhile, Spartans lost 6-0 away to Celtic. The Capital side were hoping to use the game to open up a gap between them and their opponents in the table but the convincing win for the Hoops means they move ahead of the Ainslie Park outfit on goal difference.

Two goals from Suzanne Mulvey either side of a Kerry Montgomery strike left Spartans trailing 3-0 at half-time. A quick double from Christie Murray put the result beyond doubt before Mulvey completed her hat-trick.

In SWPL2, Hearts had Hutchison Vale to thank for keeping hold of top spot. The Jambos, who had leapfrogged Hamilton last weekend, travelled to Glasgow Girls where a first-half effort by Leigh Ferrol and a second-half strike from Lauren Coleman were enough to give the hosts a 2-0 win.

The result left the door open for Hamilton to reclaim top spot from Hearts if they could claim three points but Hutchison Vale had other ideas as they claimed a 2-1 win which put them just two points off top spot.
