Hibs Ladies suffer agony on final day

The Hibees drew 0-0 away to Celtic in the final round of fixtures and, had they taken a late chance that fell to striker Susan Fairlie, they would have finished second instead of fourth.

With neither side able to claim all three points in the “battle of the greens”, Forfar Farmington were able leapfrog the pair at the death and finish a point ahead of them both.

“It’s a frustrating way to end the season,” commented Kirk. “There was very little in the game and neither goalkeeper had much to do. Their keeper [Chloe Logan] made a great save in the last five minutes from Susan and had that gone in we would have finished second in the SWPL.”

Hutchison Vale lost their undefeated run after slipping to a 1-0 defeat away to Rangers but Coach Ian MacDonald remained philosophical.

He said: “It’s disappointing to lose our unbeaten run on the final day of the season. Both teams had chances on the day but we have failed to take ours whilst Rangers made the most of theirs.”

Elsewhere, Spartans ended their campaign with a spirited performance against champions Glasgow City, but were ultimately defeated 2-0 thanks to a double from Jane Ross.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom for the Capital clubs as Hibernian Reserves won the Scottish Women’s Football League First Division title and celebrated with a 6-0 win over Forfar Farmington Reserves, whilst Hearts Women clinched the national Second Division title by defeating Dunfermline 2-0 at Recreation Park, Alloa.
